About me

Sunday 30th May, 2004
As of June 2008, I am 55 years old and living with my partner in St Neots, Cambridgeshire, UK.

I was born in Hainault, Ilford, Essex on the outskirts of London. It was still pretty rural in the 1950's. My father was a senior civil servant and wo rked in Westminster. I have an elder brother who lives in Australia and two children.

These days I seem to spend much of my time working or playing with our internal systems. When I'm not, I am an active radio amateur and hold the callsign s G6KVK and M5KVK. My interests in amateur radio lie in the fields of emergency communications and data transmission over radio links. For many years I was a member of RAYNET, the UK's emergency communications group of radio amateurs. I am still a member of RSGB and of ARRL.

When I'm in the office, I can be reached on Echolink as M5KVK.

By education and predilection I am an engineer; having graduated with a BSc in Electrical Engineering in 1975 and a PgDip in Software Principles and Practices in 1984.

After my first job, working in one of the defence contractors, I spent 12 wonderful years working for ITT in and around London. I worked at ITT's International Data Engineering Centre (IDEC) up until 1985, designing private telephone, packet switching and telex exchanges, Unix computers and Office Automation products:  moving between hardware design, software, systems engineering, management and project consultancy.

When ITT sold IDEC to STC and STC then bought ICL, I ended up working for ICL in its Financial Services Business Unit in the City. From there I struck out on my own as a consultant, and contracted for a number of years before being party to the formation of Lloyd McKenzie & Partners in 1991 and another company that was to become elastictime in 1992. All of the time since has been spent consulting on Lotus' and Microsoft's communications products: Notes, Domino, SharePoint and Groove.
