<dc:subject>Why am I excited by Lotus Foundations?</dc:subject>

Anton asks, what is it for?

Well, I see Foundations as a solution for the small business (5-100 people) who need a single server installation that delivers the bulk of their IT needs and does it without requiring them to have any in-house IT expertise.

This is exactly the market to which Microsoft markets Small Business Server: file sharing, email and Internet security.

The advantage of Foundations is that it does it cheaper and in a more autonomic fashion. Aspects such as backup, which is always a challenge for companies with no in-house IT, is a doddle with Foundations.

I have to say though, that if Microsoft ported the automated workstation backup stuff from Windows Home Server to SBS, then there might be more of a fight.

<dc:subject>To Vista or not to Vista</dc:subject>

#1 I did think about using something like Ubuntu as the primary OS, but rejected it. My "main" work laptop is a Mac (i.e. that is the one I use if I have a choice), the T60 is used when I have to run software that requires Windows (Visual Studio, Notes 8, SharePoint Designer, Groove etc) as I still have a PPC Powerbook rather than a newer Intel machine. I already make extensive use of virtualisation on the T60 so I did consider just virtualisng my existing XP environment and running it as a VM under something like Ubuntu. I rejected this because of the performance penalty.

I know that the correct response is to ditch the T60 and buy a new Powerbook with triple booted Mac OS X (with Fusion), Vista and Windows 2008 Server, but I can't afford that right now.

I probably will still shrink my XP environment right down and virtualise it though.

#2 I take your point Julian (and apologies for the posting error, I really must look into that). This installation of XP is close on 2 years old now and is getting to the "it's time to re-install" stage anyway. It was this, and the increased "pressure" from Microsoft, that triggered the thought about upgrading to Vista.

#5 I use just about everything in my work and home life: Mac OS X, XP, Ubuntu, CentOS, Windows 2000, Windows 2003, Windows 2008; you name it, I use it for something. An increasing amount our business is now SharePoint and Groove rather than Notes

#6 Thanks for the feedback Simon. As I said above, I do use Ubuntu on one of my home machines. I took an almost instant dislike to Office 2007 when I installed it because of the radically changed UI. At the time, I just couldn't afford to re-learn all my Word and Excel habits, so I re-installed Office 2003. It may be time for another try.

Inevitably someone would raise the issue of Ubuntu. I use Ubuntu and my wife has Vista on a new HP laptop, and, of course, I have used XP for many years.

My view is that Ubuntu is nowhere near ready for the mass market. I can deal with it because I have some experience of Unix at work. However, the recent upgrade to 8.04 came with a beta release of Firefox and even though Firefox 3.0 is now officially released my version will not display Flash animations without me clicking on them. Firefox 3.0 on Vista works perfectly.

Vista is a dream to use, particularly in the area of wireless networking and it is quick to boot (although difficult to compare a dual core 64 bit Athlon chip against a 3.4Ghz Pentium.)

Last week at work I got a ThinkPad T61 running XP. It is slow, and the XP/Office software is poor when compared with Vista/Office 2007.

What it will be like when I'm upgraded to Office 2007 and Notes8 later in the year remains to be seen...

Personally, I would do a clean install of Vista and spend the time reinstalling the apps you need You will probably find the laptop runs faster as a result.
